CONCRETE CONSERVATION ACTION - C5

Protecting the grottos

Partner responsible for the action: Gargano National Park Authority

Target species: bats which mainly use underground caves and grottos at the local level. These are the Mouse-eared Bat, Lesser Mouse-eared Bat, Long-Fingered Bat , Schreibers' bat, Mediterranean Horseshoe Bat, Lesser Horseshoe Bat, Greater Horseshoe Bat, Serotine, Kuhl's Pipistrelle, Savi's Pipistrelle and the European free tailed bat;

This action foresees the installation of grates and gates at the entrances of some grottos, using types of gating which have already been tested in other conservation activities for bats, particularly those with horizontal bars (for example, the LIFE Natura 98 “Pellegrino” project carried out in the Province of Bologna-Emilia Romagna region). These allow for fauna to pass through and at the same time keeps out humans ( speleologists, trekkers), who can be a source of disturbance when  there is a lack of rules and structures which facilitate the correct use of these resources.

The sites which are in most need of protection are those that can be considered highly suitable for the conservation of the target species either due to the current presence or presence in the past of bat colonies (identified through the scientific inventory foreseen in action A3).

The action responds to threat 9.

Expected results:

 The protection of 10 karst caves.
